On Thursday, October 23rd, the YWCA leadership team celebrated Edwin, our incredible ThePlace2B Director, at the Community Caring Conference Hero’s Banquet, where he took home the award for Individual Hero!
Edwin was nominated for the work he does with our ThePlace2B program.

His nomination stated,
“Edwin Salazar is much more than the Director of ThePlace2B, an after-school program for at-risk youth operated by YWCA Quad Cities. Under his leadership, ThePlace2B has become a vibrant, welcoming refuge where young people can learn, grow, and discover their potential.
ThePlace2B offers programming Monday through Friday, nutritious meals each night, transportation to and from the center, mentoring, field trips, and fun activities. But what truly sets the program apart is Edwin himself. He goes far beyond the expectations of his role to meet the needs of his students, often in deeply personal ways. He takes them to doctor’s appointments, helps them get their driver’s licenses, guides them in opening bank accounts, and even purchases soccer cleats when they can’t afford them. For many youth, Edwin is the one steady adult who believes in them unconditionally, celebrating their milestones and cheering them on at graduation.
When Edwin joined YWCA Quad Cities two years ago, ThePlace2B had been on hiatus due to COVID-19. He brought it back to life with passion and vision, serving over 100 youth last year alone, with 25–35 students attending on a typical evening. While the programming is outstanding, the real reason students return day after day is the trust and connection Edwin fosters.
Beyond his work at ThePlace2B, Edwin is an active member of the community, serving on multiple advisory boards and committees, sharing his insight, and advocating for youth and families across the Quad Cities.
Edwin Salazar’s dedication, compassion, and leadership exemplify the very best of community service. He is not only shaping a program, he is shaping lives and futures. “
We couldn’t be prouder or more grateful to have Edwin as part of our YWCA family.
