Race Against Racism
YWCA QC’s Race Against Racism October 31st, 2020 9:00 AM
Unfortunately, 2020 is not turning out to be the year anyone expected. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to wreak havoc on this country and the Quad Cities community is no exception. Knowing that we cannot predict what regulations may be in place and/or personal comfort levels,
RAR2020 will be shifting to a virtual event, just as so many other events have done since this all began back in March.
The COVID-19 pandemic has not and will not stop us at YWCA Quad Cities; our mission of eliminating racism and empowering women still continues more so now than ever before! We believe this starts with recognizing our country’s long history with racism and its impact on
our systems, structures and institutions. If we want a just, peaceful society, it is our mutual responsibility to address racism and we encourage everyone to do just that by participating in the VIRTUAL RAR2020!
We all know a 5k race cannot end racism, but what it CAN and WILL do is provide an opportunity for our community to come together, have some fun and show our united support for making a difference, wherever that might be in the Quad Cities. When hundreds of women, men and
children run and walk through the streets of the Quad Cities, we will all be able to feel the energy. It might look different for 2020, but you CAN and SHOULD participate in this important event. A virtual race is not something new and has been successfully executed for numerous walks, 5k and 10k races, as well as half marathons and marathons. A virtual race is where you run at your own time/pace and place on your own, or better yet with a group you’ve organized and
put together; however, following all CDC safety requirements. Please note that this is a self-coordinated run with no setup, chip-timing, or coordinators on-site.
Anytime during the month of October (October 1-31, 2020), we want you to lace up your running/walking shoes and hit the pavement to take a stand against racism. Traditionally, Race Against Racism has presented two options: a 5k (run or walk) and a 1-mile fun. Since were shifting this to a virtual event, participants can run or walk 10 miles, 2 miles, jog around the block, etc. Further, its not just limited to running or walking; participants are encouraged to walk, run, bike, climb, walk-jog, skateboard, rollerblade or whatever works for them on their own, with their family, or a socially distant group! Participants will connect their experiences and offer encouragement to others by posting on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter and tagging us
and utilizing the hashtag #RaceAgainstRacismYWCAQC.
There will now be one registration fee ($30/per person OR $20/per child up to age 12), which includes a t-shirt. Masks and doggie bandanas will be available for additional purchase. We will host a no-contact packet pick-up on September 28th and 29th. For those unable to attend packet pick-up, no worries we can ship their registration goodies.
If you registered for Race Against Racism 2020 through the GetMeRegistered website and paid an online registration fee, you have two options:
1) YOU CAN SHIFT YOUR REGISTRATION TO THE NEW VIRTUAL EVENT. You will receive a race t-shirt and will have the opportunity to purchase additional items we are having made just for this event (face masks and doggie bandanas); or
2) YOU CHOSE NOT TO PARTICIPATE IN THE VIRTUAL EVENT AND WE TRANSFER YOUR REGISTRATION FEE TO RACE AGAINST RACISM 2021, WHICH IS BEING HELD ON APRIL 17, 2021. You will not receive anything for RAR2020, but your registration details will be transferred for next year’s event and you will receive race goodies at packet pick-up before the race.
As always, thank you for your patience and understanding as we charter these unprecedented waters and how the COVID-19 pandemic has caused the drastic change to in-person events. This was a difficult decision to make, but one we feel strongly that is the best for the safety of
Packet pick-up will take place at the YWCA Iowa Empowerment Center, 1225 E River Drive, Suite 110, Davenport, IA. We will host a contactless pick-up on Monday, September 28th from 9:00-2:00, and Tuesday, September 29th from 12:00 – 6:00!
