If you’ve been to the YWCA in the past 5 years, you would probably recognize Dora, the receptionist, but not before she recognizes you. In her time here at the YWCA, Dora has greeted each and every person who comes in the morning, always with a charming smile and something sweet to say. I took a moment to talk to Dora about her favorite things about working at the YWCA.
Dora’s time here at the YWCA has been full of great memories. When asked about her favorite, she laughed and asked why she had to pick just one. Among many was one of late Aquatics Director Julie Burton. Julie would come in almost every morning and sing to Dora to make her laugh. What stands out the most was one time when Julie and a pool patron came out to the front desk and sang Dora an Irish duet. Her other favorite memory was when she was surprised by Channel 8 News and their ‘Pay It Forward’ campaign. Last summer she was presented with $300 from Ascentra Credit Union and surprised by family members, friends, and coworkers. This stands out not only because of the excitement, but the fact that she was nominated.
Dora’s favorite part about working at the YWCA is that she gets to see all the families each and every day. She shares a special connection with so many of the kids who come in daily that she feels she has gained many extra ‘grandkids’. The kids love Dora, too. Many stop in behind the desk each morning to say hello.
Staff and members all speak highly of Dora. She’s always there to lend an ear or to tell you a quick story. Her presence at the front desk is one the Y is very grateful for. Thank you for all that you do, Dora!
This is Part One in an ongoing series to interview the YWCA staff.
